Our 2022 Program Chairs, Stavroula Chrona and Alexander Theodoridis, are continuing work on planning a great in-person conference in Athens, Greece, scheduled for 14-17 July 2022 at the Grand Hyatt Athens. If circumstances are such that an in-person gathering will have a negative impact on ISPP, or make it impossible to meet in person, we will again switch to a virtual meeting. We will keep you apprised of the decisions as they are made, so please watch your e-mail for announcements and updates, as well as the ISPP web site.
APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH LEFT TO SUBMIT! The submission process for ISPP’s 2022 Annual Meeting opened on 4 October, and will close 1 December. The Call for Papers and link to the event site where you submit your abstracts can all be found on www.ispp.org/meetings.
A familiar face at ISPP conferences and “voice” on the other end of e-mails for seven years now, Heather Schlabach, will be leaving ISPP for a new career opportunity. My heartfelt thanks to her for being my right-hand person in the Central Office for all of these years, and best wishes on the new career path.
Joining the ISPP Central Office in November is Minnie Chappell, who will be assisting me with all of the ISPP operations. Welcome, Minnie! We are sure that she will be a great addition to ISPP.
Please watch your e-mails and the ISPP web site for the calls for nominations for our various awards for 2022. The awards committees will be announced soon, and you will be able to submit nominations to the committee Chairs.
Have you checked the ISPP web site Announcements page lately? There are a number of job openings posted on the page, along with some other announcements of interest.

Call for the Twinning Program
Call for the Twinning Program in English [see below for the call in Arabic, French, Spanish and Turkish]
We are happy to announce that we are still accepting applications for our New Twinning Program among Scholars under Threat (ISPP members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution). The New Twinning Program has been set up with the aim of facilitating scholarly collaborations between threatened political psychologists and program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar. We are grateful to the 24 scholars who have already expressed their interest to work together with a scholar under threat as partners. We would kindly like to ask our members to reach out to those scholars within their networks around the world who may benefit from participating.
You can find more information about the Twinning Program here.
ISPP is committed to the protection of its members whose academic freedom is at risk anywhere in the world due to the political context where they work and/or live. Therefore, we offer emergency funds to members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution and are without an official affiliation or income in their current location. You can help by donating to the ISPP Scholars under Threat fund through this link.
ISPP has recently supported 17 scholars from Turkey. Therefore, at the moment we cannot accept applications for emergency funds. We are currently collecting donations in order to be able to reopen the emergency fund.

Call for papers: ISPP Annual Conference, 14-17 July, 2022
The theme of the 2022 Scientific meeting of the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) is ”Democracy as an Achievement: Recognizing Tensions, Challenges, and Aspirations through Political Psychology.” Our destination of choice is Athens, Greece, one of the world’s oldest cities, with rich heritage, histories and cultures spanning 3,400 years, the birthplace of democracy, and now a cosmopolitan metropolis that is the southernmost capital of Europe.
Call for papers for small group meeting: An EASP Community of Environmental Social Psychologists (26-28 January, 2022)
With this workshop we aim to establish an international community of environmental social psychologists within EASP to pool the competences necessary to address these justice- and group-related ramifications of climate change. The aim is to include the width of social psychologists interested in environmental issues and climate change, and increase understanding in specific challenges diverse groups and regions are facing. As such, we specifically aim to reach and train EASP members from regions where access to scientific information, facilities and/or funding is scarce compared to European standards.
Call for papers: Special issue on engaging with conspiracy theories: Causes and consequences
During the Presidency of Donald Trump and the Covid-19 pandemic, conspiracy theories became a core part of societal discourse. Such “theories”—which posit that groups of powerful people are secretly cooperating to pursue malevolent goals—have been rife on social media, and their presence has had significant consequences. For example, believers in the QAnon conspiracy theory stormed the US Capitol building on January 6th 2021, and there is evidence that belief in Covid-19 conspiracy theories has undermined the success of governments’ fight against the pandemic. Other conspiracy theories have negative effects on the social fabric more generally. Specifically, they have been used to undermine governments, promote racism, recruit extremists, commit crime, and undercut public health measures.
Given the significant (and growing) societal relevance of conspiracy theories, it is not surprising that research on this topic is booming. This research has generated important insights into why people adopt conspiracy theories instead of more plausible explanations and what the consequences of these beliefs are. However, this boom has mostly been based on cross-sectional studies. Whilst this research has generated important knowledge on many of the concepts correlated with belief in conspiracy theories, experimental research on the topic is scarce. Key questions, therefore, remain about the antecedents and consequences of conspiracy theories, and experimental methods are better equipped to answer these questions. For example:
What are the causal antecedents of the belief in conspiracy theories?
What are the consequences—positive and negative—of being exposed to conspiracy theories?
Which psychological mechanisms underly the causes and consequences of the effects identified above?
What are situational factors preventing the negative effects of exposure to, or belief in, conspiracy theories?
This special issue will focus on these key questions, but submissions substantially advancing our understanding of the antecedents and consequences of engagement with conspiracy theories in other ways would certainly be welcome. In line with JESP policy, the articles accepted will mostly use experimental or quasi-experimental methods. However, articles including studies using other research designs will also be considered, given that this field profits, for instance, from considering the rich data available via social media.
