President’s Corner January 2020

Dear ISPP Members,

It is time for me to write a few words updating you on the goings-on in the Governing Council of ISPP after our recent meeting in Ann Arbor. It was a very productive meeting overall, and it was gratifying to see how many members of the Council were able to travel very long distances to come together and deliberate. One of the main issues we discussed was our decision to visit Santiago, Chile for the 2022 ISPP meeting. We selected that site before the country began experiencing a significant student-led protest movement in the fall of 2019. Fortunately for us, we have two Chilean scholars serving now on the GC- Monica Gerber Pluss and Roberto Gonzalez- who helped us consider whether to postpone the visit to Santiago. Given how relevant this is to the Society in the near future, I asked Professor Gerber Plüss to recap our discussion and their recommendation here. She responded with the following brief statement:

"We had a long and fruitful discussion at the GC meeting in relation to whether -given the current social unrest- the 2022 ISPP meeting should be conducted in Chile or not. Since October 2019 Chile has been facing protests and social unrest as a direct response to an increase in transport fares and a long-winded irritation with the country's levels of inequality, living conditions and poverty. The protests developed with an increase of violence from a part of the involved activists as well as violent police repression of protesters in general. These days, several organizations are claiming that Human Rights have been consistently violated in Chile during these months. In the meantime, a process is starting to evaluate whether and how the current Constitution (approved during Pinochet’s military dictatorship) should be changed.

In relation to the ISPP meeting, Roberto González explained that the location originally contracted for accommodation and presentations was no longer available and that after a long search no other hotel/university combination fulfilled the requirements for such a big meeting. The case was also made that given that the constitutional process is taking place during the next two years in Chile, the situation will remain uncertain for some time. However, there was a strong interest among GC members to have the meeting in Chile and a decision was made to move the date to 2024 (since the EASP meeting is in Europe in 2023). We hope to see you all in Chile in 2024!

Monica Gerber Plüss”

Sincerely,

Nick Valentino
