Call for the Twinning Program in English [see below for the call in Arabic, French, Spanish and Turkish]
We are happy to announce that we are still accepting applications for our New Twinning Program among Scholars under Threat (ISPP members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution). The New Twinning Program has been set up with the aim of facilitating scholarly collaborations between threatened political psychologists and program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar. We are grateful to the 24 scholars who have already expressed their interest to work together with a scholar under threat as partners. We would kindly like to ask our members to reach out to those scholars within their networks around the world who may benefit from participating.

You can find more information about the Twinning Program here.

ISPP's Scholars under Threat Fund

ISPP is committed to protecting its members whose academic freedom is at risk anywhere in the world due to the political context where they work or live. ISPP's Scholars Under Threat (SUT) Committee has been working to support ISPP's members at risk. Academic freedom as it relates to both research and teaching is absolutely essential for the advancement of scientific knowledge. The SUT can support academics by providing free membership to ISPP, access to emergency funds for scholars under threat to continue their livelihoods, and access to the ISPP twinning scheme for academics who wish to have mentorship or support from colleagues in less risky contexts. If you or someone you know has had their academic freedom put at risk and feel that you would benefit from ISPP support, please contact us

See our Scholars under Threat webpage for an overview of our initiatives and information on how YOU can help.

Call for submissions

Call for unpublished data for a meta-analysis on intergroup contact and political ideology

We are a team from the University of Toronto working on a meta-analyses on the effect of intergroup contact on affective polarization, or dislike toward political others (or partisan animosity, political prejudice etc.). This meta-analysis is part of a larger project led by Zi Ting You, a PhD Student, and Dr. Elizabeth Page-Gould, a Professor, in the Psychology Department at the University of Toronto. We are seeking your help in including your unpublished research.

Inclusion criteria:

  1. The groups must be explicitly political in nature (e.g. Democrats/Republicans, conservatives/liberals). That is, the intergroup contact in question must be participants interacting with their political outgroup.
  2. Affective polarization must be the dependent variable (negative attitudes towards political outgroup e.g. prejudice, feelings thermometer, social distance, stereotypes).
  3. Contact must represent face to face interactions with the political outgroup. Direct, manipulated, vicarious, extended, imagined, and indirect contact will all be included but contact in the form of exposure to outgroup ideas (e.g. reading outgroup speeches or social media posts) are outside the scope of our analysis.

What do we need from you?
We will need the raw correlation coefficient (Pearson's r) between intergroup contact and affective polarization. We will use this measure as an indicator of effect size and compare them between studies. If you calculated effect size a different way (e.g. Cohen's d), please provide your metric and statistic and we can convert it. If you did not calculate a full effect size but you are willing to provide the raw data and coding guide for us to calculate r ourselves, that would be great as well.

What format do we need the data in?

We prefer CSV files, but we can also handle SPSS or STATA data files. We are primarily R users, but we can use different packages to read your data. If you are concerned that we may not be able to read your data, please let us know through the open question in the Qualtrics form or by emailing louisa.you@mail.utoronto.ca.

How will you get the data to us?
Please fill out our Qualtrics form. There are opportunities in the form to type in statistics or to upload raw data.

When do we need the data by?
December 1, 2022.

What if your work is already published?
We've scoured the literatures for already published work, but there is a chance we missed your paper. Please let us know of your work by emailing louisa.you@mail.utoronto.ca or fill out the Qualtrics form and provide the citation of your published paper.

If your work matches these criteria, please click here to submit your statistic or data. Thank you so much!

Best wishes,
Zi Ting You and Elizabeth Page-Gould

Call for Special Issue Proposals to be Managed by Guest Editor Teams: Political Psychology

Political Psychology is keen to receive expressions of interest from teams that are interested in editing a special issue or section.Managing a special issue is a great way to make an impact on the field and to provide other researchers with a sense of the research that has been undertaken on a particular topic to date. It can be a milestone for research on any topic. Special issues can have considerable impact.  But make no mistake, editing an issue though rewarding can take considerable investment of your time.

Here are some tips before you proceed:
1. If you have an idea for a special issue, please feel free to contact us at any time of the year at this email address: politicalpsychology@ul.ie.
2. Be realistic about your timelines. Put together a timeframe for your issue or section. This should include when you propose to advertise your call for papers, how you will advertise your call for papers and ensure a good range of quality submissions, when you would anticipate expecting decisions on summary submissions, date of first paper submission and deadline for all resubmissions as well as proposed final date of publication. Build in some extra time for unforeseen contingencies.
3. Generally bringing the issue to completion is the key challenge. Early career researchers are welcome to manage special issues and sections. It may be helpful if you can co-opt someone more experienced in editing and reviewing to offer advice and support about meeting the challenges inherent in the peer review system.
4. Many hands make light work. So, find some fellow travellers.  Don’t look for replicas of yourself. We encourage mixed gender teams involving those who cross disciplinary, national, methodological and/or theoretical boundaries.

Formal Proposal Stage
We will need a document addressing the five points below to formally consider the issue or section and to progress the call for papers.

1. An outline of the issue or section you are proposing together with evidence that the special issue (or section, which would be shorter) would make a strong theoretical contribution to the field.
2. Include how the issue or section fits the aims and scope of the journal and in particular connects knowledge from political scientists, psychologists, and other disciplines or practitioners.
3. We particularly welcome special issues that are able to point towards practical implications and applications of their scholarship. Highlight the value of the learning that will accrue from the issue or section.
4. A framing of your issues that allows an understanding of the issue that emerges in the Global North and the Global South (i.e., developed and developing countries) and that ensures a diversity of authors across gender, location and discipline.
5. Include short research biographies of the editorial team (max 1 page each). We will look for evidence that you have the ability to bring projects to completion in a timely way even if you haven’t managed or edited a special issue previously.

Not including CVs, your proposal addressing points 1-4 should be around 500-600 words, and absolutely no more than 1000 words.

Upon receipt of the proposal, we will provide your team with feedback, suggestions, or (less commonly) a straight approval. Following this, we are happy to arrange an online conversation if you have further questions.

One last important note
All special issues submissions are subject to the peer review process overseen by the Editors in Chief. The Editors in Chief reserve the right to make final judgement on all editorial decisions, but normally will be on hand only to offer advice and support. Full papers are invited after an open call for abstracts reviewed by the special issue editors with the support of the Editors in Chief. Submissions can only be managed within the ScholarOne system.

Each of the editors of the proposed special issue can be an author on only 1 paper in the special issue (plus a special issue introduction, if the authors intend to write one). If it is the intention of any member of the guest editorial team to submit a paper for their own Special Issue, this should be noted and justified in the proposal. If the proposal is accepted, such a submission will be handled by the Editors in Chief.
