Call for the Twinning Program
Call for the Twinning Program in English [see below for the call in Arabic, French, Spanish and Turkish]
We are happy to announce that we are still accepting applications for our New Twinning Program among Scholars under Threat (ISPP members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution). The New Twinning Program has been set up with the aim of facilitating scholarly collaborations between threatened political psychologists and program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar. We are grateful to the 24 scholars who have already expressed their interest to work together with a scholar under threat as partners. We would kindly like to ask our members to reach out to those scholars within their networks around the world who may benefit from participating.
You can find more information about the Twinning Program here.
ISPP is committed to protecting its members whose academic freedom is at risk anywhere in the world due to the political context where they work or live. ISPP's Scholars Under Threat (SUT) Committee has been working to support ISPP's members at risk. Academic freedom as it relates to both research and teaching is absolutely essential for the advancement of scientific knowledge. The SUT can support academics by providing free membership to ISPP, access to emergency funds for scholars under threat to continue their livelihoods, and access to the ISPP twinning scheme for academics who wish to have mentorship or support from colleagues in less risky contexts. If you or someone you know has had their academic freedom put at risk and feel that you would benefit from ISPP support, please contact us.
Fully funded PhD position in experimental social psychology - KU Leuven
The Laboratory of Experimental Social Psychology (LESP) of KU Leuven offers a fully-funded PhD position to work on the project "Are old folks wise, or are they wiser than youngsters? How the wording of claims about social groups spreads stereotypes", funded by FWO (grant number G053623N).
People's views of social groups (e.g. age, gender, professional, religious and ethnic groups) do not only manifest themselves in what they say or write about those groups, but also in how they express it. With most readers and listeners paying more attention to the contents than to the wording of verbal communication, the wording can imperceptibly affect how readers and listeners think about the described group(s). An important but as yet understudied aspect of the wording of claims about social groups is their comparative format the extent to, and the manner in which claims explicitly state that an intergroup comparison is being involved. For example, the claim Old people are wise does not explicitly compare groups, even though it suggests that old people are wiser than members of other age groups. Old people are wiser than younger people makes that comparison explicit. From a purely logical point of view, Younger people are less wise than old people makes the same comparison. However, readers or listeners will probably understand it very differently. This project examines determinants of the comparative formats that communicators use and the extent to which comparative formats shape the interpretation of claims by readers and listeners. It also examines to what extent and in which manner both processes jointly contribute to the spreading of stereotypes. The project will test hypotheses derived from theories and findings from social and cognitive psychology, linguistics, and philosophy.
As a predoctoral researcher, you will play a major role in preparing and conducting the experiments, analyzing and interpreting the data, publishing the research, and disseminating the results to a wider audience. You will participate in the weekly lab meetings of the LESP, as well as in seminars within and outside the research group, and in regular online meetings with Susanne Bruckmüller.

PhD position in social and cultural psychology - KU Leuven
The Center for Social and Cultural Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at KU Leuven is looking for a PhD student to conduct research on cultural differences in emotions in a multicultural society. The focus of the research will be on developing interventions to bridge those differences. The PhD student will also assist in teaching.
Human emotions underpin successful relationships with others. To monitor, or also influence, the course of interactions with others, it is very important to have a good understanding of your interaction partner's emotions. After all, those emotions indicate what a particular event means for your interaction partner's motives/goals and how your partner will relate to the event. However, there is a lot of research that shows cultural differences in emotions, which hinder emotional understanding in an intercultural interaction and thus also hinder the establishment of intercultural relationships. This project investigates whether awareness that emotions are culturally variable leads to better emotional understanding and greater perceived relationship quality. Moreover, it investigates whether an 'emotion difference' intervention can enhance this awareness. This project aims to promote social cohesion and justice "bottom-up" by strengthening emotional understanding in cross-cultural interactions.
The candidate is expected to complete a PhD within a 6-year period. The main activities will involve studying the role of cultural differences in emotions in the perceived quality of social interaction, and developing an intervention that helps bridge the differences. To this end, the candidate will coordinate fieldwork (in buddy organizations and schools), analyze and interpret the data, and write scientific papers. In addition, the doctoral student is expected to provide teaching support for courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, e.g., by participating in meetings of the didactic team, by contributing to the didactic material, and by helping to prepare and correct exams.
Profile
We are looking for a candidate:
with a master's degree in psychology; research experience in the field of emotions and/or multicultural society is recommended;
with special interest in cultural differences in emotions and their impact on relationships in multicultural society;
with a good knowledge of statistics and data analysis;
with demonstrable and excellent teaching qualities;
who distinguished himself during the studies;
with organisational talent;
who is creative and results-oriented;
who is a loyal team player but at the same time can work autonomously and deliver quality work
with strong communication skills in Dutch and English (oral and written).
Candidates are requested to submit, in addition to a detailed CV, a short cover letter.
We offer a full-time position for two years, renewable twice after a positive evaluation up to a total period of 6 years. On top of a competitive salary, KU Leuven offers a number of additional benefits, such as the possibility of flexible working hours, hospitalization insurance, reimbursement of commuting costs by public transport, cheap meals, a KU Leuven bicycle, etc. The candidate can start from September 2023.
For more information please contact Prof. dr. Batja Gomes de Mesquita, tel.: +32 16 32 58 68, mail: mesquita@kuleuven.be.

Call for proposals - Special issue in the Journal of Social Issues
Dear Colleagues,
My colleagues, Professors Chiu and Khan, and I are guest editing a special issue for The Journal of Social Issues on incorporating geopolitical perspectives into psychological research. We strongly believe this special issue would be of particular interest and relevance to scholars aligned with ISPP's mission.
The special issue, "Recontextualizing Psychology: The geopolitics of behavior," aims to encourage social scientists, especially psychologists, to consider geopolitical factors in their work. It will feature articles exploring how geopolitical events and forces interact with psychological phenomena. Geopolitics can be defined as the study of the spatial aspects of power relationships within the context of international relations. This includes the role of geographical factors, such as location, territory, and environment, in shaping political strategies, actions, and outcomes among nations (Cohen, 2014). We choose geopolitics as the contextual framework because of its neglected status within mainstream psychology (including political psychology) on the one hand, and its major role in the genesis of psychology’s knowledge base on the other hand. Geopolitics goes beyond the political dynamics at the individual (micro) level (e.g., political self-identification) and the national (meso) level (e.g., presidential elections) by incorporating the international level that may expose the larger (macro) global dynamics that interact with psychological outcomes at the lower two levels of inquiry (e.g., colonialism, war, vaccine-inequities). We invite scholars to submit their work that highlights the role of geopolitics in psychology. The full special issue can be accessed via this link: https://spssi.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/15404560/homepage/cfprecontextualizing
All abstracts must include the following:
the working title of the proposed article
the corresponding author(s) (with contact information) as well as the name and institutions of anticipated co-authors
a description of what you intend to cover in your article so that we can anticipate the contents and focus, as well as plan the special issue in terms of topics covered; it is important that the geopolitical roots and/or context of the topic is foregrounded in the description
a description of the theoretical underpinnings of the work, the methodological approach taken, and implications for social policy should also be considered
for empirical articles, the abstract should include descriptions of the sample, methods, and primary findings
qualitative submissions will be strengthened by authors’ consideration of COREQ or SRQR guidelines
for review articles, the abstract should include descriptions of the means by which the work reviewed was chosen (e.g., selective, supportive, exhaustive) and primary conclusions
Note that submissions must reflect on completed or nearly completed work. Proposals based on empirical research in progress (or based on future studies) would not be appropriate. Submitted abstracts will be screened for acceptance by the Issue Editors. Issue editors and the JSI editorial board will provide feedback on accepted abstracts to support development of manuscripts.
Send abstracts to all three special issue editors (please copy each of us):

Call for papers: Journal of Latinx Psychology
The Journal of Latinx Psychology is the official publication of the National Latinx Psychological Association and is dedicated to research, practice, advocacy, education, and policy within the Latinx psychology community. Editor Esteban Cardemil, PhD, is committed to promoting and exploring the diversity within the Latina/o population with respect to national origin, generational status, gender, and sexual identity.
The journal fills a critical need for the field, given the tremendous growth in the Latinx population over the past few decades. This population growth has not been matched by growth in economic opportunities, educational achievement, or health outcomes, and there remain many gaps in our understanding of these issues.
We are particularly interested in manuscripts that contribute to knowledge of Latinx psychology through research, methodological innovation, and inquiry; develop and advance theories pertinent to Latinas and Latinos; promote education and training of psychologists to work with Latinas and Latinos; address issues of social justice and advocacy in Latinx communities; promote the application of research and training to advancement of policy related to Latino individuals and communities; and use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed method approaches.
We encourage articles on topics such as:
immigration and its impact
health and wellness
spirituality
mental health issues
Latinx identity
multigenerational families
Articles may be full length (35 pages) or brief reports (no more than 20 pages.) All submissions should reflect APA style and contain a public significance statement: a translational message for the general public’s better understanding of research.
Additional information about the journal, including guidance for authors, is available on the Journal of Latinx Psychology homepage.
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through our submission portal, to the attention of Editor Esteban Cardemil, PhD.
Contact Dr. Cardemil for queries or more information.
The next ISPPNews will be published in July 2023.
To submit your contributions for ISPPNews please send an email to the ISPP Central Office.
