As the pandemic continues to varying degrees around the globe, we also continue to the best of our abilities. At ISPP, that means entering the intensive process of finalizing the schedule for our 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting.
The accepted author registration deadline was 31 March. With that deadline behind us, our Program Chairs, Allison Harell and Carla Houkamau, will be working hard over the next few weeks to organize panels, plenary, blitz, and social sessions into three primary time zones to accommodate as many people as possible during reasonable waking hours. As of the writing of this article, we have 654 individuals registered for the conference, which exceeds last year’s attendance! We are overjoyed that so many of you have decided to join us online (again) this year for what we hope will be an intellectually stimulating and also engaging experience. Please watch for postings and announcements in the latter-half of April that the schedule is ready and posted.
In parallel to Allison’s and Carla’s efforts, our new ISPP Academy Director, Gizem Arikan, is also hard at work with organizing the 2021 ISPP Academy. The Academy will also be virtual, taking place via the same online portal as the main conference. The reading and resource materials will be available in advance of the Academy, as will the recorded lectures by the instructors. Students in the Academy should watch for an announcement in late June that the materials are available, and for their login details in their e-mail. Over the scheduled Academy dates (8-10 July 2021), live Q&A sessions will be scheduled with the instructors to discuss the content provided by each of them.
Our Early Career Committee members are also putting forth great efforts, with Xiaowen Xu and Nina Spälti organizing the Mentoring Lunch, which will be held virtually in small groups organized by the mentors at mutually-convenient times for everyone around and during the conference week. Mukadder Okuyan and a selected committee reviewed applications for 2021 Early Career Scholar “Travel” Awards and have notified recipients. Awards will be used to help offset the cost of conference registration for Early Career Scholars with accepted abstracts, based on financial need.
Looking ahead to future years, we are hopeful that we will be able to hold our 2022 Annual Meeting in person in Athens, Greece. Circumstances are constantly changing, and we will keep you apprised. We are also in the process of making arrangements to reschedule Montreal for July 2023 at the Omni, as originally planned for this year. Related in part to future meetings, ISPP will be sending out a survey later this year with questions on a variety of topics. One objective of the survey is to try and gather data about the diversity of ISPP’s membership. Another goal is to try and get a sense of what the new reality might be with our in-person conferences. Do universities have travel bans for staff and students extending into 2022? Later? Do people have funding available to attend academic conferences, or is there a freeze on funds until some future date? Do people have increased family/home demands that will prevent them from attending conferences in person? There are other types of questions, as well, to try and help ISPP’s leadership get a good sense of the organization’s membership and member circumstances around the globe. Everyone will have a different situation. Please take some time to respond to the survey when it is distributed, to help the leadership best plan how to serve you in the near future. ISPP needs to carefully apply its resources (financial and human), so please help us understand how best to do that by responding to the survey.
Lastly, the voting for new Governing Council members, who will begin their terms after the 2021 Annual Meeting, closed as of 13 April. E-mails with personalized links were sent out to all current ISPP members in March and April. Watch for an announcement soon about your newly-elected leaders that guide the organization!

We are happy to announce that we are still accepting applications for our New Twinning Program among Scholars under Threat (ISPP members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution). The New Twinning Program has been set up with the aim of facilitating scholarly collaborations between threatened political psychologists and program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar. We are grateful to the 24 scholars who have already expressed their interest to work together with a scholar under threat as partners. We would kindly like to ask our members to reach out to those scholars within their networks around the world who may benefit from participating.

ISPP has recently supported 17 scholars from Turkey. Therefore, at the moment we cannot accept applications for emergency funds. We are currently collecting donations in order to be able to reopen the emergency fund.
2-3 Year Post-Doc Position, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel
The Psychology of Intergroup Conflict and Reconciliation Lab at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is seeking applicants for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for a period of 2 or 3 years. Research in the lab focuses on the psychological (mainly emotional) underpinning of long-term intergroup conflicts, focusing on attempts to develop and implement psychological interventions that promote social change in favor of democracy and peace. The successful candidate will work together with Prof. Halperin, and will manage and lead the lab’s newly funded ERC project titled: "Personalized Interventions to Improve Intergroup Relations and Promote Peace”. The ERC funded research is aimed at identifying novel mechanisms by which different intergroup interventions influence different individuals, i.e., creating an innovative framework for personalized intergroup interventions. The postdoc will work closely with team members, will oversee communication in the team and coordinate day-to-day activities to ensure successful completion of the project.

Postdoctoral Researcher on the Social Impact of Art, University of Amsterdam (UvA)
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for a postdoctoral position on the social psychology of aesthetics, which is part of the ARTIS project (Art and Research on Transformation of Individuals and Societies) funded by a Horizon 2020 consortium grant.
ARTIS will address the need to capture, assess, and harness the societal impact of the arts by providing novel methodological tools, and building bridges among scientists and artists. Within the project, you will have the opportunity to work closely together with other consortium members and other collaborators of the PI, including the University of Vienna, Humboldt University of Berlin, Royal Holloway University of London, University of Oxford, and University of California Berkeley.

Call for participants for a brief study on how researchers in psychology evaluate scientific abstracts
We, Hema Preya Selvanathan, Harry Manley and our colleagues, are conducting a study on how psychology researchers evaluate scientific abstracts. Specifically, we are interested in how researchers’ own area of expertise and academic experience might shape the way they evaluate abstracts in our field. The study involves reading a series of abstracts and answering several questions about your opinion on each one. These are hypothetical abstracts, similar to the kinds you might see in published journal articles and conference submissions. The survey should only take about 10-15 minutes and is open to all psychology researchers (from Masters or PhD students to senior professors). | Here is the link to the study.
Meta-analysis of research on the frequency of positive and negative direct and indirect contact (or interactions) between distinct social groups
Dear colleagues,
We, Stefania Paolini, Ursula Horton, Timothy Lang, Oliver Christ, and Kylie McIntyre, are carrying out a meta-analysis of research on the frequency of positive and negative direct and indirect contact (or interactions) between distinct social groups. We are currently looking for unpublished studies. Specifically, those which fit the following description:
1. The research is quantitative in nature and investigates intergroup contact or interactions of any type (e.g. direct, extended or mediated contact etc.) between members of distinct social groups in society.
2. The research includes one (or more) measures of the quantity of positive and negative contact either in absolute or relative terms. Some examples of labels for eligible measures are frequency of contact, number of intergroup friends, experiences of discrimination, and descriptive norms. If the response scale refers to positive and negative experiences in terms of their quantity, it may be eligible.
OR
• If it includes both a measure of global quantity of contact or measure of global contact quality. For example, as in multiplicative scales.
If you have any unpublished work that fits the above inclusion criteria (even vaguely), we would like to assess it and potentially include it in our analysis.
