Executive Director's Corner August 2020

I hope this edition of ISPPNews finds you all well and safe. And I hope that many of you reading this were able to join us for our first-ever virtual Annual Meeting in July. The virtual meeting was a huge success and we have received overwhelming positive feedback about the experience from the nearly 600 persons who attended worldwide. The virtual Summer Academy was also well-received by the 47 delegates who attended this year. We are sorting through all of the text responses from the post-conference survey and will take your feedback into consideration going forward, as applicable to both in-person and virtual/hybrid events. Please remember that the recordings of the Summer Academy and conference sessions are available to all registrants (as applicable) until 30 August 2020, so time is running out to review anything that you missed! We expect to post the Presidential Symposium and keynote talks on the ISPP web site under Past Meetings soon.

Things with in-person gatherings, travel, hotels/lodging, and even meals for groups and in restaurants are changing constantly these days, and they vary widely between locations and providers. What one country is doing, another is not (10-day quarantine, 14-day quarantine, people from here are banned, etc.; masks required in public vs. no masks required; and so-on). New cleanliness protocols at this hotel are not the same as the hotel across the street. Requirements for indoor gatherings are not uniform. It’s overwhelming if you try to keep track of it all. New standard practices, guidelines, requirements, and building/business certifications are being developed across the whole of the hospitality industry (to include airports, airlines, trains, etc.), but these will vary from place to place. We will keep you informed of this information as the time for making your plans for the 2021 Annual Meeting draws nearer.

At this point, we do not know exactly what to expect for the 2021 Annual Meeting, so we are planning for both in-person in Montreal and also for virtual. When the submission process opens in a few months, you may see questions and information fields for both types of meetings. We will be doing this so that, should we need to go virtual for the 2021 meeting, we will already have the information we need from you, and we will not have to send you messages to collect that data later. We hope that you can join us for the meeting – in whatever format it occurs! Other anticipated future meeting locations: Athens, Greece (2022); Prague, Czech Republic (2023); Santiago, Chile (2024); and trying again for Berlin in 2025 or later. Please check our Future Meetings Page for updates, as things can change. Specific dates and venues for future locations will be posted on that page once we have contracts in place.

Reminders:
  • The new ISPP Constitution was ratified by the membership and is posted on the ISPP web site.
If anyone has any problems with any aspect of their membership or renewal, or general questions about ISPP, please do not hesitate to contact us in the Central Office. Thank you all for your membership and your patience while we figure out the new reality in which we all need to live and operate. Stay well and safe, and we hope to see you (in person) again soon!

Sincerely,
Sev

Call for the New Twinning Program
Call for the Twinning Program

We are happy to announce that we are currently accepting applications for our New Twinning Program among Scholars under Threat (ISPP members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution) and we continue to welcome applications from scholars who would like to serve as partners in the program. The New Twinning Program has been set up with the aim of facilitating scholarly collaborations between threatened political psychologists and program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar. We are grateful to the 16 scholars from 10 countries who have already expressed their interest to work together with a scholar under threat as partners. As most of the partners have a background in psychology, we would especially like to encourage our political scientist members to apply as partners.

You can find more information about the Twinning Program here.

ISPP's Scholars under Threat Fund

ISPP is committed to the protection of its members whose academic freedom is at risk anywhere in the world due to the political context where they work and/or live. Therefore, we offer emergency funds to members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution and are without an official affiliation or income in their current location. You can help by donating to the ISPP Scholars under Threat fund through this link

ISPP has recently supported 17 scholars from Turkey. Therefore, at the moment we cannot accept applications for emergency funds. We are currently collecting donations in order to be able to reopen the emergency fund.
See our Scholars under Threat webpage for an overview of our initiatives and information on how YOU can help.

Call for data: Meta-analysis on the Big-Five and self-rated political orientation

My colleagues Chris Sibley, Danny Osborne, and myself (Nicole Satherley) are conducting a meta-analysis on the associations between the Big-Five dimensions of personality and selfrated political orientation, where political orientation is assessed using a single-item rating as liberal versus conservative or left versus right-wing. We are particularly interested in data collected/published since 2009. I would appreciate it if you could contact me if you have any such data (particularly unpublished data) and would be willing for your findings to be included in the meta-analysis. All I need are the correlations and sample details. Of course, any data or unpublished papers included in the meta-analysis will be referenced appropriately.

If you have data that might be relevant, please contact Nicole Satherley: nicole.satherley@auckland.ac.nz
