I hope this edition of ISPPNews finds you all well and safe. The world certainly seems rather surreal at the moment as we find ourselves in circumstances unlike any we’ve ever known. But much as how people continue to get up every morning and brush their teeth, so are things continuing at ISPP. As you are most likely aware, we have had to cancel our in-person Annual Meeting that was planned for Berlin in July. But this does not mean that we are skipping an Annual Meeting for 2020 – not at all. We have a few months to plan a virtual, all-online meeting instead, and that is exactly what we are working on.
Yes, shifting to a virtual event has created a lot of work for many, but we are going to make it happen! President Valentino has constituted a task force for organizing the conference and supporting the work of the Program Chairs, Lily Mason and Thomas Craemer, and we are meeting regularly. Be assured that this will NOT be a glorified Zoom webinar. We will make this as close to an in-person event as we possibly can. We’ve partnered with a professional company that produces online events, and we’ve provided you with an information document and some mock-ups to give a general idea of what the online meeting will look like. All panels, posters, and roundtables will be structured like panel sessions online, as groups of individual presentations. The Mentoring Lunch is still on track to occur virtually, as is our Summer Academy. Things are developing each day, as the meetings and technology industries are rapidly developing new tools for online meetings, and we are watching for any additional tools we can utilize to enhance your experience. But even at this point in time, we will be able to replicate A LOT online!
Because a virtual meeting will obviously be a bit different from an in-person meeting, and we are all facing difficult times economically, ISPP leadership reduced the registration prices by 50% from those for the in-person meeting. Your registrations will help cover the cost of the production and management of the meeting, which includes live tech support, streaming of presentation materials, and recording all sessions and making them available on-demand to each registrant. We have sent out several e-mails to those who had already registered for Berlin, asking you to indicate if you will or will not participate in the virtual event, and all refunds have been processed accordingly (full or partial). If you did not receive a refund and believe one is owed, please contact me. For those who booked hotel rooms in ISPP’s room block at the Maritim, you should be able to cancel at NO CHARGE. If you have difficulty with canceling, please let the ISPP Central Office know so that we can try and assist.
The virtual conference will run in two different time zones which overlap for several hours: CET and EDT. Lily and Thomas are busily working away to structure sessions accordingly. You will be able to attend any session in either time zone, and the schedule attempts to put as many sessions as possible in the workday for members from different parts of the world. If you can’t attend a session due to time constraints, not to worry – everything will be recorded, and you can watch sessions on-demand. They will be available ~12 hours after the close of each day. Please watch your e-mail and our web site for updates about the virtual conference.
Who knows exactly how things will unfold over the next few months. Without a doubt, our lives will never be exactly the same. But whatever the future holds, one thing we are all hoping for and looking forward to is meeting again IN PERSON in Montreal in July 2021! We hope that you can join us! Call for the New Twinning Program
We are happy to announce that we are currently accepting applications for our New Twinning Program among Scholars under Threat (ISPP members who lost their academic positions or their income in direct connection with political persecution and/or to members who have been displaced as a result of political persecution) and we continue to welcome applications from scholars who would like to serve as partners in the program. The New Twinning Program has been set up with the aim of facilitating scholarly collaborations between threatened political psychologists and program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar. We are grateful to the 16 scholars from 10 countries who have already expressed their interest to work together with a scholar under threat as partners. As most of the partners have a background in psychology, we would especially like to encourage our political scientist members to apply as partners.

ISPP has recently supported 17 scholars from Turkey. Therefore, at the moment we cannot accept applications for emergency funds. We are currently collecting donations in order to be able to reopen the emergency fund.

Five PhD Studentships in Psychology 2020
Applications are invited from excellent candidates in relation to the PhD projects described below. It is recommended that potential applicants contact the supervisors informally prior to applying. Interested candidates may apply for PhD study throughout the year. However, a number of fully funded PhD studentships are available for PhD study starting autumn 2020. Studentships include a stipend and EU fees. For non-EU applicants, a non-EU fee waiver may also be available, but this cannot be guaranteed (a difference of approximately €6000p.a.). Selection for studentships will be competitive and will take place in May/June 2020. Shortlisted candidates should be available for interview in late May/early June for a virtual interview. To inspire novel ideas and dialogue on the topic of social power, we would like to bring together papers presenting novel theoretical approaches to social power, together with preliminary evidence in favor of them. We are pleased to forward this Call for Papers for a focus section on “Group focused enmity conceptual, longitudinal, and cross-national perspectives based on pre-registered studies” to you, to be published in the International Journal of Conflict and Violence.
We are seeking empirical analyses that
contribute to the phenomenology of the syndrome of GFE, for example by disentangling the different components of GFE in different cultural contexts (based on cross-sectional data and inter-cultural comparisons) and/or the empirical differentiation of the GFE syndrome from related concepts like ethnocentrism and social dominance orientation.
focus on intrapersonal and social stability and change in mean values and structure over time, incorporating panel and/or repeated cross-sectional data.

Amélie Godefroidt is finishing a systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between terrorism and political and/or intergroup attitudes. Call for unpublished data on belief in conspiracy theories
Mikey Biddlestone, Ricky Green, Aleksandra Cichocka, Karen Douglas and Robbie Sutton from University of Kent are conducting a meta-analysis of the psychological factors associated with belief in conspiracy theories. We are currently gathering unpublished studies that meet the following criteria:
The study/sample includes any measure of conspiracy beliefs (including generalised conspiracy beliefs, conspiracy mindset, belief in specific conspiracy theories).
The study includes any measure of:
i. Psychological needs and motives (including, but not limited to epistemic, existential, and social needs).
ii. Cognitive ability (such as working memory).
iii. Individual differences (such as cognitive style).

To All ISPP Members, please be advised: due to printing and distribution disruptions caused worldwide by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wiley-Blackwell, the publisher of Political Psychology and Advances in Political Psychology, will suspend the distribution of hard copies where applicable until further notice. Where delivery is still available, that will continue. Where not available, your hard copies will be held by distributors until they are cleared to resume delivery. Delivery may be spotty in some areas. All members will still have full online access to the journals and Early View with your ISPP membership, and we encourage you to utilize those.
