Cheryl Koopman
1950-2019

Dr. Cheryl Koopman, a nationally and internationally recognized academic scientist who made significant contributions to understanding stress and health in the social and political context, died May 14, 2019. She was 68 years old. [more]

Current ISPP President David Redlawsk expressed the Society's sadness at learning the news: "As a Program Chair (twice), ISPP Governing Council Member, Vice President, and eventually President (2008-2009), Cheryl played an important role in the development and success of the ISPP over more than 20 years. I enjoyed working with her in my own early years on the ISPP Governing Council, and I will always be grateful to her for her guidance. ISPP and the discipline have lost a major figure and friend."

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Doctors without Borders. If you wish to leave a message to the family or let them know you made a donation, you can email them at CAKdonations@gmail.com.

Observing trials against academics in Turkey

Earlier this year three international observers went to Istanbul on behalf of ISPP to speak with our colleagues in Turkey and attend two trials against academics who signed the Peace petition in 2016 and were charged with spreading terrorist propaganda. A report about their observations and experiences can be found here.

Colleagues in Turkey as well as their case lawyers have stressed the impact of international observers on the court process. Observers also serve in boosting morale.

For ISPP sending observers to Turkey is an opportunity to get first-hand information about the current situation and to jointly plan support actions.  Colleagues in Turkey have therefore asked us to send observers for other trials of ISPP members. The trials have up to now been held in Istanbul.

Upcoming trial dates:
June 28, 2019
July 2, 2019

If you are interested in joining the pool of observers get in touch with us via info@ispp.org.
Thousands of people in Turkey are inhibited to go abroad by the government, without any legal decision or judicial process. Turkish government is denying their constitutional right to travel just like their freedom of speech - even when they have jobs and visas abroad.

The purge in Turkey deepens: The case of ISPP Member Orhan Kaya

While previously the purge consisted of dismissing academics from their jobs, now the purge has extended to students who are dismissed from, or denied access to graduate programs.
