Fall 1994 Vol. 5(2)

The purpose of the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) is to facilitate communication across disciplinary, geographic and political boundaries, among scholars and concerned individuals in government and public posts, the communications media, and elsewhere, who have a scientific interest in the relationship between politics and psychological processes. In so doing, ISPP aims to continue to advance scholarship in political psychology, and to contribute to the usefulness of work in political psychology.

Executive Director's Corner

In this mailing you will find the Call for Papers for the 1995 Annual Scientific Meetings, scheduled for July 5-9, in Washington, DC. After the wonderful 1994 meetings, which we can attribute to our great hosts in Santiago de Compostela, I hope many of you will make plans to attend and participate. On behalf of all of those who attended the Meetings in Santiago, let me extend my thanks and appreciation to Dr. Jose Sabucedo Cameselle, and his colleagues, for a most warm and successful meeting.

The Governing Council decided to slightly modify the timing of elections to the Executive Committee and Governing Council. We will be mailing ballots in early January to all members who have paid their 1994 annual dues. If you are not sure of your membership status, check the label, the number above your name will indicate the most recent year you paid your dues, or contact me. The goal of this change is to enable more ISPP members to participate in the election of officers.

Our Political Psychology Syllabi collection continues to be of general interest. This year we reprinted the collection and added new syllabi that members contributed. If you have a syllabus that might be of interest, please send it to me and I will include it in the next reprinting. I have a few announcements to make:

* Complimentary memberships remain available for graduate students who have successfully defended a thesis proposal or completed their graduate degree in political psychology. ISPP faculty members who have a student to nominate should contact me. The 1994 cohort will be presented in the next issue.

* The Governing Council has directed me to produce the first ISPP membership directory at the end of this year. The membership directory will be sent free to each member who renews in 1995 prior to March 15th. This is the year to make sure your membership information is correct. We hope you will find this directory to be of great use.

* This summer at the Annual Meeting, the Governing Council of ISPP voted to set up a Political Psychology electronic discussion group (Listserv) open to all for discussion of issues related to political psychology. Almost simultaneously, the Political Psychology Section of APSA voted to do the same. This technology enables any of our members with e-mail connection to the Internet to engage in ongoing discussions on topics of mutual interest. It became clear that a joint effort would be a useful way to proceed, so Michael Milburn (milburn@umbsky.cc.umb.edu) and Maryann Cusimano (cusimano@cua.edu) will be co-administrators of the POL-PSYCH list that will become operational sometime this spring if all goes well. We will hopefully have a formal announcement in the next issue of ISPP News.

* A number of the appointed officers of the Society, including the executive director, have terms of office that will be expiring in the near future. Future issues of the newsletter will be reporting on the searches.
George Marcus Executive Director

Conference Director's Report

I hope very much that you will make space on your calendar for next summer's conference in Washington, D.C. to be held at the fabulous, 4-star ANA Westin Hotel July 5-9, 1995. Those of you who remember our 1990 conference in Washington will be delighted to know that Jerrold Post has again agreed to serve as Conference Chair. At our 1990 conference, Jerry planned a series of exciting events including a debate between the top pollsters for the Reagan and Dukakis campaigns as well as personal briefings from Senators and senior administration officials. Jerry promises that this summer's events will be even more enticing and will include a special fireworks celebration for early arrivals on July 4.

The luxurious ANA Westin is located between Georgetown and Dupont Circle and features one of the finest health clubs in the city. Room rates at the Westin run over $200.00 per night, but we have secured a special group rate of $95.00 for single and double occupancy rooms, in addition to even deeper discounts for graduate students or conference delegates with special financial circumstances. Please bring your family and enjoy Washington over the holiday weekend.

This summer's conference in beautiful Santiago de Compostela, Spain was a highly successful event due to the hard work of our host, Professor Jose Manuel Sabucedo, as well as Program Chairs Stephen Walker and Doris Graber. Our opening convocation was convened in a 16th century lecture hall at the University of Santiago and the banquet was held in the 500 year-old dining hall at a local monastery. I am grateful to the Conference and Program chairs for their efforts and to the 274 participants who attended.
Aaron Belkin Conference Director

The Young Scholars Committee

The Young Scholars Committee has focused their efforts on widening the participation of young scholars and other groups into ISPP. The activities sponsored by the committee in Santiago de Compostela included the first informal luncheon for young scholars as well as a roundtable on "The Teaching Profession and Political Psychology." The roundtable, co-chaired by Jerel Rosati and Jean Garrison of the University of South Carolina, included participants from diverse backgrounds in political psychology. Participants discussed how they became political psychologists, how they fitted within their larger profession, and how they incorporated their work in political psychology into their teaching. For the Washington meetings, we look forward to sponsoring more activities. Inquires about the committee, upcoming activities, and suggestions should be addressed to: Jean Garrison Department of Government and International Studies Gambrell Hall University of Sourth Carolina Columbia, SC 29208 USA Tel: (803) 777-0437 Fax:(803) 799-9882 Jean Garrison Young Scholars Committee

This, of course, is common in environmental and other social-political conflicts. The program is available free of charge. It comes compressed on 4 high density disks, and will run on any Macintosh computer (although it will run best with 68040 Macs having the QuickTime extension and 8 MB of RAM).
