Dr. Jeanne N. Knutson
Data at ISPP Central Office
The family of Dr.
Jeanne N. Knutson, founding member of
ISPP, has graciously donated to ISPP the data she collected during
research toward her two PhDs.: Survey
of elementary and middle school children's political belief systems,
"The Development of Political Attitudes and Beliefs" Political
Science, University of Oregon, 1960; and,
Interviews and projective tests (Rorschach, PTAT) with members of
the Black Panther movement, "Motivation
for Political Behavior" Clinical Psychology, UCLA, 1970.
We can make this data (paper format
only) available to current ISPP members conducting research to be
used for purposes consistent with the mission of ISPP and the
furthering of the understanding of the psychological processes
involved in determining political behavior. Please contact the ISPP
Central Office at
ispp@maxwell.syr.edu (subject line: “Use of Knutson
data”) to request use of the data, explaining your research project
and goals. Upon review and approval, we will discuss how you might
best access these materials.
Available
data includes the following:
1. Political Beliefs and Attitudes Survey
This data consists of one hundred completed questionnaires on
“Political Beliefs and Attitudes.” Each questionnaire contains 320
questions related to political views and activities. Respondents
were selected based on their membership in a political organization
active in the United States, such as the Democratic or Republican
Parties, the Peace and Freedom Party, and the Communist Party.
The data is in raw form. Some handwritten scores of unknown
reference accompany the data.
2. Index of Psychic Deprivation
This data consists of a questionnaire used for the study, along with
the codebook used to analyze the data. The questionnaire consists of
113 questions. Respondents are asked to indicate whether they agree
with or disagree with each question. Respondents are also asked to
place one ‘psychic need indicator’ along side of each question
(these indicators correspond to Maslow’s need hierarch scale).
Unfortunately, most of the actual data, in the form of completed
questionnaires, is missing. Only 8 completed questionnaires are
contained in the archive. There is no information on the intended
purpose of the study, or the identity of those that eventually
received the questionnaire.
3. People and Politics Poll
This data consists of a questionnaire used for a study of people and
political opinions that was administered to approximately 3,000
local workers and managers in California. The questionnaire consists
of 228 items related to demographics, social beliefs & attitudes.
Only six competed questionnaires are contained in the archive.
