Nicholas Valentino is an Associate Professor of Communication
Studies and Political Science and Research Associate Professor at
the Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research at
the University of Michigan.
Professor Valentino teaches courses in political psychology,
communication, public opinion, political socialization, media and
group identity, and experimental methods. His research focuses on
the impact of mass media during political campaigns on mass
attitudes and political behavior. In particular, he has focused on
the political psychology of racial cues in television news and
political advertising on political decision-making.
He is currently working on a project funded by the National Science
Foundation exploring the impact of mass media cues on political
behavior on the Internet. He is also working on a new research
initiative to incorporate theories of emotion into our understanding
of the role of racial and other group priming strategies during
campaigns.
His main goal for ISPP would be to maintain the intellectually
vibrant and diverse community of scholars involved in the society by
continuing to channel energy into graduate student and junior
faculty initiatives.
